America Is Replacing Coffee. Also Not Replacing Coffee.

5h ago · 11 sources · trend

Consumers are not quietly quitting coffee. They are aggressively Googling their options.

Coffee alternatives are up +39.5% year over year, with 544.2K average monthly popularity, according to Spate. Nearly 99.7% of that activity is happening on Google. Translation, shoppers are actively searching for benefits, not just stumbling onto a TikTok trend.

Matcha is the breakout star. It is up +154.5% YoY with 1.8B popularity. That is not niche behavior. That is scale. Herbal, green and wellness teas are also climbing, fueled less by flavor and more by function.

The real tell is in the “concern” searches. Gut health tied to tea is up +642.3% YoY. Menstrual relief is up more than 1,000%. Stress is up +50.1%. Beverages are being recruited for digestion, hormones and calm. Coffee alternatives are positioning as self-care in a mug.

And yet, coffee itself is hardly in decline. It is sitting at 8.8B popularity, growing +21.1% YoY. At the same time, searches for caffeine-free are up +329.4%, while caffeine hit is up +406.6%.

Consumers are not choosing sides. They are modulating. Some want less buzz. Some want more. Everyone wants control.

For CPG brands, the opportunity is not just swapping beans for botanicals. It is owning a specific benefit and saying it clearly. Calm. Gut. Focus. Pick a lane. The search bar is already open.
