**When Energy Sneezes, Your Grocery Bill Catches a Cold**

5h ago · 6 sources · trend

After a brief breather, food inflation is back on the move. In April, prices for food at home in the US rose 0.7% month over month, reversing a -0.2% dip in March. Zoom out and the global backdrop looks even hotter. The FAO Food Price Index climbed to 130.7 points, up 1.6% from March, marking a third straight monthly increase and the highest level in more than three years.

Energy is the accelerant. Energy prices jumped 17.9% year over year in April, with fuel oil up 54.3% and gasoline up 28.4%. At the same time, vegetable oil prices rose 5.9% month on month, hitting their highest level since July 2022 amid disruption around the Strait of Hormuz. Meat is not offering relief. In April, meat and poultry prices increased 0.65% month on month. Beef rose 1.16% and lamb 1.04%. Year on year, beef is up 8.22% and lamb 3.38%, pushing overall meat and poultry inflation to 4.06%. Globally, meat prices rose 1.2% month on month to a record high, tied to limited slaughter-ready cattle in Brazil.

Why it matters: brands are getting squeezed from both sides. Energy drives production and transport. Oils and meat hit core center store and perimeter categories. The quick take? When oils and beef move at the same time, reformulation and pack architecture start looking a lot more attractive. Inflation is no longer isolated. It is layered.
