**Walmart Cuts Code, Pours Milk**

1h ago · 4 sources · regulation

Walmart just trimmed about 1,000 roles as it simplifies its operating structure under CEO John Furner. The cuts and relocations hit global technology and product teams, with some employees asked to move to Bentonville, Arkansas, or Northern California. The retailer has shifted from organizing separately across Walmart US, Sam’s Club, and international markets to building on a unified, single shared platform.

At the same time, Walmart opened its third milk processing facility in Robinson, Texas, investing over $350 million, about €324 million, and creating more than 400 new jobs. The 27,870 square metres facility will process and bottle milk for Great Value and Member’s Mark, serving more than 650 locations across the South Central US. It is part of a pledge to invest $350 billion in US-made, grown, or assembled products by 2031.

Zoom out. Walmart employs about 2.1 million employees worldwide, including about 1.6 million US employees, and 92% are hourly workers. It also became the first retailer to reach a $1 trillion market value in February.

Why it matters. Walmart is trimming tech layers while doubling down on physical supply chain control. Fewer org charts, more owned milk. For CPG brands, that is a signal. The world’s biggest retailer is tightening its platform and building private label capacity at the same time. If you sell dairy, you are not just competing on shelf. You are competing with a retailer that owns the plant, the data, and 650 locations worth of leverage.
